Trucking – Younger Drivers Soon a Reality

As required by the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing a three-year pilot program, which allows a limited number of individuals between the ages of 18 and 21 to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce if they received specified heavy-vehicle driver training while in military service and are sponsored by a participating motor carrier.  Read more here.

Trucking Index Expected to Rise

FTR’s Trucking Conditions Index for June, at a reading of 2.92, continues from the previous month in a low trough due to slow freight and a lull in new regulations. Even with negatives affecting the trucking sector, the reading remains above zero, which is the break point between good and bad conditions.  Read more here.

Truck Driver Turnover On The Rise Again At Large Carriers

According to the American Trucking Association, truck driver turnover rose to its highest rate in three years at large carriers.  The ATA’s data from the third quarter of 2015 showed that truck driver turnover rose 13 points to reach 100% for carriers with more than $30 million in annual revenue.  Read more here.
